Deja Vu Lyrics Translation

Date: April 2018

Client:
 Self

Job:

Translation:

- Lyrics (Spanish - English)

Why I Wrote What I Wrote:

Chanced upon this song and was smitten by how the lovely bachata music carries through such sad lyrics. While I do not know Spanish, I found the lyrics' English meaning translation, and then converted it into lines that could be sung to the original music, yet remain true to its original meaning as far as possible. Parts that would become awkward in English had complementing elements inserted for aesthetics.

Like a fresh lemon tequila
With a dash of salt you flavour
Same old wounds, the same old song
Well, it’s the same old story
Like the way you would have told me
Déjà vu, an endless song

Oh, I’m better solo
To forget your eyes, your touch and let you go
Oh, I’d dance alone
To forget that we had ever had it all
This bachata, hipocresía total

(Mejor me quedo solo

I’ll never love anymore
Leave, turn and tango
One last dance now from me with just a song
I’ll never love anymore
Like our bachata
Just a last dance for me in a song
Don’t say you love me anymore
I won’t speak of love
Won’t speak of love anymore
No, won't speak of your love no more

It’s her idea, rewind and then play
To cajole and tease, she then sways
And my mind and soul restir
Well, it’s the same old story
Like the way you would have told me
Déjà vu, an endless song

And oh, I’d stay alone
To forget your eyes, your touch and let you go
Oh, I’d dance alone
To forget that we had ever had it all
This bachata, de hipocresía total

(Mejor me quedo sola

I’ll never love anymore
Leave, turn and tango
One last dance from me with just a song
I’ll never love anymore
Like our bachata
Just a last dance for me in a song
Don’t say you love me anymore
I won’t speak of love
Won’t speak of love anymore

I’ll never love anymore
Leave, turn and tango
One last dance now from me with just a song
I’ll never love anymore
Like our bachata
Just a last dance for me in a song

Precision Writing

Date: January - February 2018

Client:
 D.R. Freeze Educational Publications

Job:

Editing:

- Precision Writing Instructors' Handbook
- Precision Writing Instructors' Sourcebook

Details:

I was approached for this editorial project by a colleague in the teaching field, Dr Rick Freeze from University of Manitoba, Canada.

I had had the prior opportunity to implement his reading remediation programme, Precision Reading, co-presenting my findings with him at the 2014 Asia TEFL Conference in Kuching, Malaysia. The enthusiasm I have for and prior knowledge I had gained about said programme likely prompted his consideration of my services for this current publication.

This project involves the editing of content and language style of both books in the Precision Writing programme: the Instructors’ Handbook, instructing teachers how to implement the programme, and the Instructors’ Sourcebook, a comprehensive collection of learning resources to be used in Precision Writing. A most meaningful and inspiring project to kickstart the year.
